Lutherans are catholic

During the Nicene Creed we assert that we believe in "one holy catholic and apostolic Church." The word “catholic” (with a lower-case c) means universal.

Lutherans embrace the fullness of church tradition and are therefore part of the catholic (universal) Church, rather than a specific Christian denomination (e.g., Roman or Byzantine Catholic).

Lutherans are catholic because we:
  • share the articulation of Christian faith in the Nicene and Apostles’ creeds;
  • embrace scripture as the authoritative source for our faith;
  • celebrate the sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist (also called Holy Communion or Lord's Supper);
  • worship according to a liturgy whose basic form is shared with other Christians;
  • organize holy days according to a liturgical calendar commonly followed by most other Christians; and
  • use a lectionary (cycle of scripture readings) in common with most other Christians.
